What Even Is Muslin?

New products are an absolute delight to develop, however our recently released Bubble Blanket came with a few early questions. Partially around the fabric we decided to use.

Having seen a lot of muslin in the world and even used it ourselves with our own babies, we realised we didn’t fully understand what makes muslin so popular for baby products. We wanted to share a bit about what we learnt along the way.

A Bit About Muslin

We discovered that muslin is most commonly made from cotton, although variations using viscose, silk and even polyester exist also. What makes muslin especially unique is its lightweight, breathable nature, and gentleness on delicate skin—making it a seemingly perfect option for babies.

Muslin is made using a plain weave technique, a single fill thread path alternates over and under a single warp thread. This method creates those wonderful properties that we’ve mentioned earlier. It is also a loose weave, allowing the fabric to circulate air freely, reducing the risk of overheating while keeping babies warm and comfortable. We discovered that this natural breathability is one of the main reasons muslin has long been a preferred fabric for baby essentials.

Combine this unique weaving technique with all the exceptional qualities for cotton, it soon becomes clear that Muslin is an incredibly versatile fabric, ideal for baby blankets and swaddles.

Does Muslin Wash Well?

Ok, this will come as a shock to some but muslin cotton actually improves with each wash, becoming softer and more comfortable over time. The natural fibres in muslin cotton relax with every wash, enhancing its softness without losing durability. Additionally, muslin retains its breathability and lightweight qualities, ensuring that it stays gentle on a baby's skin while maintaining its structure.

What Makes Bowy's Muslin Blanket So Special?

Firstly, we sourced premium muslin cotton. We found lower quality muslin typically used shorter cotton fibres that weren’t as soft and were prone to substantial pilling, qualities we wanted to avoid. We then combined 8 layers of this delightful fabric, adding softness and warmth while maintaining the balance of a relatively light weight blanket. Next, while looking absolutely adorable the bubble texturing of the blanket created a beautiful cushioned effect, adding to the overall comfort and security of the item. Perfect for those nursing sessions before bed time.

The Bowy Bubble Blanket, made from muslin cotton, is more than just a blanket – it’s a soft, breathable, and a stylish addition to your nursery essentials. And the best part? It’s been released in 3 colours so you match with other complementing items in the Bowy Made collection :)
